X Surprise-Release 'Alphabetland,' Their First New Album in 27 Years

X have surprise-released their first new album in 27 years, 'Alphabetland.' Scott Dudelson/Getty Images · Los Angeles’ premier punk band, X, are surprise-releasing Alphabetland, their first new album in 27 years, today via Bandcamp. Label Fat Possum is currently exploring ways to give a wider release to the album, which features artwork by Pee-wee’s Playhouse set designer Wayne White. The band’s plans to tour in support of the album are on hold while cities deal with stay-at-home restrictions. X formed in Los Angeles in 1977 and put out their landmark debut album, Los Angeles, three years later.“It wouldn’t work,” Zoom said. “The chemistry wouldn’t be right. [Some band members] are in different places and stubborn, and I don’t want to go into detail, but it wouldn’t sound like an X record.” The band has yet to explain the change of heart.Prior to “Delta 88 Nightmare,” the band’s last record of new recordings came out in 2009, Merry Xmas From X, a single that featured their renditions of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” and “Jingle Bells.”The band began recording the LP in November 2018 for a session that featured five songs produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck). One of the tracks was a redo of “Delta 88 Nightmare,” which they put out last year.

L.A. punk band X winds down after nearly 50 years together - Los Angeles Times

Longtime Los Angeles punk band X is touring for their final album, 'Smoke & Fiction.' After that, they say, they're calling it a career. In front of a handful of Alex’s Bar employees hustling to prep for a sold-out club show on a recent hot summer night in Long Beach, the members of X are busy warming up at soundcheck for the first of two local gigs last month to kick off the cycle for the album that the iconic L.A. punk band says will be its last.Exene Cervenka and DJ Bonebrake perform with X at the Troubadour. ... Unlike 2020’s “Alphabetland,” the band’s first album in 27 years and first with Zoom since 1985 — recorded the year before and completed just before the pandemic — “Smoke & Fiction” came together quickly. The album’s emotional centerpiece is “Big Black X.” Throughout the song, with Zoom’s buzzsaw riffs leading the way, Cervenka references moments from X’s career. The title of the song is a reference to the visual of the band’s name lit up on a white marquee.X’s members say that despite the busy touring schedule that will take them into 2025, they plan on retiring from the road, though Doe says that doesn’t preclude them from playing one-off shows in bigger theaters and a select number of dates. “If you want to see X in a sweaty club, do it now,” he says. A few days later at the band’s rehearsal space in Orange County, Cervenka and Zoom say they’re happy with how the past handful of years have gone for the band.

The X band is the designation for a band of frequencies in the microwave radio region of the electromagnetic spectrum. In some cases, such as in communication engineering, the frequency range of the X band is set at approximately 7.0–11.2 GHz. In radar engineering, the frequency range is specified by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as 8.0–12.0 GHz.X-band radar frequency sub-bands are used in civil, military, and government institutions for weather monitoring, air traffic control, maritime vessel traffic control, defense tracking, and vehicle speed detection for law enforcement. The X band 10.15 to 10.7 GHz segment is used for terrestrial broadband in many countries, such as Brazil, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, Ukraine, Spain and Ireland. Alvarion, CBNL, CableFree and Ogier make systems for this, though each has a proprietary airlink.DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) the standard used for providing cable internet to customers, uses some X band frequencies. The home / business customer-premises equipment (CPE) has a single coaxial cable with a power adapter connecting to an ordinary cable modem. The local oscillator is usually 9750 MHz, the same as for Ku band satellite TV LNB. Two way applications such as broadband typically use a 350 MHz TX offset. Small portions of the X band are assigned by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) exclusively for deep space telecommunications.

The very first image a listener encounters in the titular opening track of X’s new album “Alphabetland” is a quintessential one: a sidewalk being torn up and covered with freshly poured pavement to obscure an old lover’s initials. That metaphorical perfection ushers in an album that was long in the making, but which finds the Los Angeles band reaching back with feeling all the way back to its musical and poetic roots. The new record is most reminiscent not of the band’s later major-label records, but instead of their first two albums, “Los Angeles” and its 1981 successor “Wild Gift,” both released by the L.A. independent label Slash Records, an offshoot of the like-named punkzine that gave X its first major print support.X’s past reverberates in these new tunes, but the group is by no means imprisoned by it. You encounter the band’s enduring themes of a longing for revolt (“Free”), of the war between haves and have-nots (“Water & Wine”), tales of amour fou (“I Gotta Fever”) and social outlawry (“Star Chambered”), plus a lovely, icy memoir of the road (“Angel on the Road”).Though Zoom regrouped with Cervenka, Doe and drummer D.J. Bonebrake in 1998 and has played the band’s early songbook with them on stage since, there was no reason to believe that L.A.’s most lionized and durable O.G. punk unit would ever release another album of fresh material. For two decades, they seemed content to roll out favorites from their first five albums, ignoring two later collections in concert. Word had it that one member of the band was X-plicitly opposed to recording new songs.

X JAPAN - NamuWiki

His real name is Hiroshi Morie. After leaving the band in January 1992, bassist Taiji left the band, and after about half a year of hiatus, as a newly recruited member, Hide's ex-girlfriend's lover worked effectively and joined the band X JAPAN. In 2009, there was a war of words with Yoshiki about Hide, and ironically, as the withdrawal turmoil occurred, it became an opportunity for the band's presence to increase. Even joining SUGIZO, the youngest escaped after 17 years. In addition to activities as X JAPAN, he has been active as a solo artist and formed a band called Dope HEADz with Pata and Hide band's INA.He is an excellent bass player who uses various techniques such as slap and tapping, but allows these techniques to naturally melt into the song without playing separately.[22] , He originally started his music life as a classical guitarist, so he is also good at playing classical guitar, so he even does guitar sessions.[23] His guitar skills are so good that he even taught guitar to Hide and Pata during his X days. His skills are famous both inside and outside of the country, to the point where he immediately joined the legendary Japanese heavy metal band Loudness right after leaving X.That's why Yoshiki protested over twice as much as other members alone.[25] Already when I entered the Jealous album recording, I was actually a contract as a studio musician. 'Studio Musicians' will literally be treated as a session musician, not the official member of X JAPAN. For Taiji, who has led the band since Indie, it would have been a contract to thoroughly collapse his pride as a musician. After Hide's death, he realized many things, and after rehabilitation, he made a full-fledged comeback in 2000 with the release of his autobiography 'The Life and Death of Legendary Band X'. In 2005, he lost the use of one of his legs due to a car accident, but since then, he has re-formed his own band, DTR , and has been active in music.

X is back with new album 'Alphabetland' and original lineup - Los Angeles Times

On Wednesday, the original members of Los Angeles punk band X dropped their first new studio album in 35 years, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. When Doe finished speaking, Cervenka, 64, who was lounging on her side of the couch with her eyes half-shut, lifted her head: “Actually, I’ve been writing X songs for 10 years, and finally everybody decided to make a record. That’s the real story.” ... L.A. punk band X tapped famed “word painter” Wayne White to create the striking cover art for its new album, “Alphabetland.” April 23, 2020Landing months sooner than the band had originally planned, it was recorded with producer Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, Joyce Manor) during two sessions in the fall of 2018 and January 2020. Doe‘s and Cervenka’s competing narratives on X’s creative return mirror the call-and-response tension that has powered their work since “Los Angeles” came out.At just over 30 minutes long, its 11 hit-and-run songs are as driving, poetic and accomplished as anything X has ever done. The album will land on the other major music streaming platforms on May 1. The band hopes to tour behind the album in the fall.Across a furious five-year period, X recorded five essential rock ’n’ roll albums: “Los Angeles,” “Wild Gift,” “Under the Big Black Sun,” “More Fun in the New World” and “Ain’t Love Grand.” Through songs including “The World’s a Mess, It’s in My Kiss,” “White Girl,” “The Once Over Twice,” “We’re Desperate,” “The Hungry Wolf” and “The New World,” the band was a crucible for the Hollywood scene of the late ’70s and helped draw the blueprint for West Coast punk.

X's John Doe, Exene Cervenka on L.A. Punk Band's History

John Doe, Exene Cervenka and the rest of the pioneering L.A. punk band X look back on their still-thriving 40-year career. But it almost didn’t happen this way for X, whose members also include singer-bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D.J. Bonebrake. Since 1977, they have ridden a roller coaster of hope and heartache as they’ve earned their status as one of punk’s most resilient bands. The reason they’re working so hard to mark this anniversary is because they understand the significance of it. Ahead of the tour, Cervenka posted a message to the band’s fans on its website: “We are still here! Just some friendly advice – you should probably come see us play while you still have the chance. Not that X is going away anytime soon! Both came out on the indie label Slash, after which Manzarek finally got Elektra to open its doors to X. The Manzarek-X collaboration would last another two albums – 1982’s Under the Big Black Sun and the following year’s More Fun in the New World – and provide the majority of the songs the band would play live over the next three decades.People are like, ‘Let me in,’ and I’m like, ‘Just a minute – I’m writing.'” At the time, Doe and Cervenka lived meagerly – the frantic lyrics of “We’re Desperate” and their scenes in The Decline of Western Civilization give a glimpse into X’s life then – but their love was strong and they made it official in 1980. “We’d played a gig in San Diego and just drove down to Mexico,” Zoom recalls. “They got married in Tijuana the next day in a little justice-of-the-peace office. I remember I hired a mariachi band to come over and play, and everybody drank a lot of tequila.”

The original members are vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist-bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D. J. Bonebrake. The band released seven studio albums from 1980 to 1993. After a period of inactivity during the mid-to-late 1990s, X reunited in the early 2000s and continued to tour.X achieved limited mainstream success but influenced various genres of music, including punk rock, Americana, and folk rock. In 1991, Music critic Robert Hilburn identified them as one of the most influential bands of their era. In 2003, X's first two studio albums, Los Angeles and Wild Gift, were ranked by Rolling Stone as being among the 500 greatest albums of all time.X's first record deal was with independent label Dangerhouse, for which the band produced one single, "Adult Books"/"We're Desperate" (1978). A Dangerhouse session version of "Los Angeles" was also featured on a 1979 Dangerhouse 12-inch EP compilation called Yes L.A.As the band became the flag bearer for the local scene, a larger independent label, Slash Records, signed them. The result was their debut album, Los Angeles (1980), which was produced by the Doors' former keyboard player Ray Manzarek. It sold well by the standards of independent labels. Much of X's early material had a rockabilly edge.During 1981, both Doe and Bonebrake (along with Dave Alvin, guitarist of the Blasters) served as members of the Flesh Eaters, performing on that band's second album, A Minute to Pray, a Second to Die. X signed with major label Elektra in 1982 and released their third studio album, Under the Big Black Sun, which marked a departure from their trademark sound.
